Black screen when Security Spy finds update
When 4.1.6 was released a couple of weeks ago I though there was a random coincidental glitch on my server which locked up and just displayed a mouse pointer and black screen. I had to force the power off and when it came back it asked me if I wanted to upgrade. The strange thing is that it just did the same again today and said I needed to update to 4.1.6 again today. I went through the upgrade and when did the "Check for updates" check. It says I'm on the latest version. I wonder what is happening here ?

I can't imagine how this could be related to the upgrade notification (though I guess we'll find out next time there is an upgrade available!). Are there any messages in the Console that are related to this (Console is in /Applications/Utilities/)?

Your right - its odd. Since the last few updates to Sierra my machine has been very stable. I will check the logs. All I can see is that the machine is unresponsive to network requests, the Security Spy web page is down etc. Pressing the keyboard you just see a black screen and a mouse pointer. I do a forced power off and on and then logon. I am immediately welcomed with a Security Spy update notification (as SS is set to load automatically). I am a little confused as to why I was asked to update today to 4.1.6 as I thought it was already on that version.

SecuritySpy only checks for updates upon startup, and it of course starts up when you restart the machine, so this could explain the correlation between the crash and asking for an update.
There is a hidden feature where if you are pressing the command and alt keys when SecuritySpy checks for an update, it will ask to install the latest update available, even it it is already installed (this allows for easy re-installation of the latest version for troubleshooting or other purposes). So could you have been holding these keys down when SecuritySpy started up? -
All things are possible. I will me mindful of what I do if it happens again.
No doubt High Sierra will inflict some instability on us. Its an operating system - not the solution to everything - Apple - please stop !
