Viewing recorded footage via SecuritySpy in Remote Viewing Mode

Hi Ben,

I recently set up a second mac running SecuritySpy mac client in "view only" mode as documented in the manual. The primary motivation for doing this was to allow managers to scrub through recorded footage in the "browser" view without needing to use the "primary" mac that is actually running SS. I only saw after the fact that the manual says "this method of remote viewing allows you to access only the live video from the server, not recorded files" , which is disappointing.

My two questions are:

1) Why is this limitation imposed?

2) Could I make a feature request to allow SS in "view only" mode to leverage the browser view to review previously recorded footage on a timeline like you can on the (primary) mac that is running SS?

The web UI and iOS app are great but still don't offer the smooth, fluid scrubbing of historical footage that the browser view does in the SS mac client.

Thanks Ben. Keep up the amazing work with SS!

  • Hi Lincoln,

The macOS SecuritySpy app isn't designed to be a viewer into another instance of SecuritySpy. But, since it already has the ability to receive and show video streams from network video devices, we allow users to use it for live viewing another SecuritySpy instance as an extra free perk. So it's not a limitation as such - it's just not a feature that has been designed for.

From another device on the network, you have both the web interface and the iOS app as options to view captures.

I know that when compared to the in-app Browser feature, the web/iOS interfaces into captures are somewhat simplified, however this is for good reason, as it allows a good user experience even over slower network connections, and within the confines of a browser window or iOS device screen. Trying to implement all the Browser features, such as scrubbing over a timeline that may comprise hundreds of individual video files, over a network connection would be extremely challenging, and would certainly not work well over most Internet connections.

I hope that web/iOS interfaces provide you with most of the features you need, even if they do fall short of the full Browser experience. Otherwise, SecuritySpy does have a Screen Control function available via the web interface that allows you full access to the Mac's screen (you just need to turn this on under Settings > Web, and it's then available to admin web accounts). This works well in a desktop web browser such as Safari or Chrome, and may provide the functionality you need.

Great to hear you are otherwise enjoying the software!
