local network speed test
HI,
I would like to measure the local network speed of my network. The path I'm interested in is Mac Mini M1 (security-spy) to hub/switch, to sky wireless router to a client device like an iPhone/laptop.
The Mac Mini has a 10Gb ethernet port which goes to an 8 port TP-link 1 gigabit switch which goes to the sky wifi router which has a 1 gigabit port.
Is there a way to test the network speed from the Mac Mini M1 to say a laptop. The reason I ask is because when I try to view/play a large file 75Gb (1 day of continuous) it struggles to play it. It plays for a few seconds then stops. The smaller motion detect files play with no issues.
Thanks James

Hi James,
75 GB is a huge file - probably too big to play smoothly in a web browser. If you want continuous-capture files, what you could do is get SecuritySpy to switch to a new file every hour (using the option at Settings > Cameras > Continuous Capture). These hourly files will be much more manageable.
To test the network speed, you could download this large file using a web browser (e.g. Safari), and see what the browser is reporting as the transfer speed for the file. Assuming the client (e.g. laptop) is connected by WiFi, this will be the bottleneck. Typical real-world WiFi speeds rarely exceed 100 Mbps, and may be much lower over longer distances or through significant obstacles like walls. At this speed, a 75 GB file would take 10 minutes to transfer.
