5.4 and headlights

Day one with 5.4, happy to report headlights are not triggering vehicle motion. Now changing setting to refine vehicle motion detection. Thanks Ben!

  • Great to hear that, thanks for the feedback!

  • With 5.5.1 I have noticed head lights reflections are setting false positives. I have vehicle threshold at 65. When I look at the AI Prediction file the entire frame is marked. Also the reflections are in the masked area, should not be triggering.

  • Sent jpg to the support email. Thanks

  • I also am seeing lots of vehicle hits from headlights. I thought it might be a training "feature"--- I mean, it did detect a vehicle, in a way. But I, also, would prefer to NOT have that count as a valid hit.

  • Sometimes at night, it's so dark and the headlights are so dazzling that all the camera sees are two points of light. In our testing, this is not classified as a vehicle by SecuritySpy - if it were, then all points of light would cause false triggers. What I think must be happening here is that the actual vehicle is visible to some extent - maybe very dark and difficult to see with the human eye, but the AI must be picking it out and causing a trigger. I think this is entirely the right thing for the AI to do - after all, it is actually a vehicle that is in the frame.

In general, the better quality the camera is, the better the AI detection will be and the more useful the captured footage will be. In addition, some cameras have a special "headlight" mode that compensates for dazzling headlights, allowing the camera to capture the vehicle in more detail. Even cameras that don't have this often will have a "backlight compensation" mode that has a similar effect, that could be enabled at night. So if vehicle detection is important to you, I'd recommend looking for a high-res camera with good low-light sensitivity, strong infra-red LEDs for night vision, ideally with a vehicle/backlight compensation feature.
