Motion events and fast forward on iOS

New to SecuritySpy, and so far very impressed while evaluating it as an alternative to our current Digital Watchdog DVR security camera system. As I told Ben in a tech support inquiry, SecuritySpy vs. Digital Watchdog reminds me of Steve Job's famous quip when he introduced iTunes for Windows: giving PC users Apple music software was like handing a cool glass of water to someone in Hell.

However on iOS I am not seeing a way to view motion events in Captures, as I do on the Mac. Since we use continuous recording this means that, as far as I can tell, on iOS there is no way to review only those portions of the timeline with motion detected. Which of course makes reviewing footage for specific events quite time consuming.

I also do not see fast forward options in iOS, another barrier. I do see the +5 second option and I see that I can pan across the timeline. But unlike on the Mac I seemingly cannot speed up timeline review to 2x, 4x, etc..

Am I missing something, or are these limitations of the iOS app by design?

Thanks, Bill

  • Hi Bill, thank you for your kind words about SecuritySpy! I'm glad things are going well so far with your evaluation.

To achieve what you want in terms of filtering in the iOS app, you'll need to enable Motion Capture recording in SecuritySpy in addition to Continuous Capture recording. This won't take up much extra storage space (since MC recording requires only a fraction of the storage space as CC recording, which you already have enabled). Then, in the Captures section of the iOS app, you can filter by file type (e.g. "Motion Capture Movies" or "Human Motion Capture Movies").

There are currently no fast-forward or playback speed options in the iOS movie player. This is mainly because on an iPhone (the most common device that customers are using), there is not a lot of screen real-estate for these extra controls. But perhaps it would be a nice addition to add these when the phone is rotated into landscape orientation - we'll consider this for the future.

  • Thanks, Ben, I'll try your suggestion. In addition to iPhones in landscape mode the enhanced playback controls would certainly come in handy on iPad, the best means for remote mobile access IMO.

With only Continuous Capture (not Motion Capture) enabled I do see Motion Events on the server Mac. Is that feature simply not available for viewing captures on iOS?

Also, I thought I'd be able to use a second Mac, unlicensed, as a viewing-only station for both live and recorded video. But now I get the idea that this solution only works for live video. If I want to use a second Mac for viewing recorded video in the Browser is there a solution short of a second license, which seems like overkill for this purpose? If I did get a second license for this purpose, would it have to be a license for the total number of cameras being viewed, or just one?

    Thanks,

    Bill

  • Hi Bill. Yes, the feature to view events in Continuous Capture files is only available in the macOS interface. But, once you have enabled Motion Capture recording as well, then this will provide a similar viewing functionality in the iOS app too.

In terms of viewing from another Mac: you are correct that a second copy of SecuritySpy will only be able to view live video from the server, not captured files. To view the server's captured files on this second Mac, you can use a web browser (e.g. Safari, Chrome), or if this is an Apple Silicon Mac, you can use the SecuritySpy iOS app (since Apple Silicon Macs can run iOS apps).
