Auto-Discovered Devices v IP Address

Since I changed providers/modem, I haven't been able to connect to my Axis cameras via IP address, though I can see the IP address on my browser after connecting via the Auto-Discovered Devices/Open in Web Browser function in SecuritySpy -- with an address like camera-00408cead08e-2.local.

Using Auto-Discovered Devices, I can use Security Spy but I would much prefer to be able to use the actual IP address.

Any advice on solving this puzzle would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  • Assuming you changed your router (not just modem), this means that the subnet of your network could have changed. The subnet is defined as the first three numbers in the IP address - so for example a device with IP address 192.168.1.20 is on the subnet 192.168.1. It's the router that decides what the subnet of the network will be.

Generally, a device on one subnet cannot communicate with a device on a different subnet. Axis seem to have a clever workaround for this, whereby they can still be reached via their Bonjour address (the one ending .local), even if they are on different subnets.

So, if you want to go back to using IP addresses, first find out what the subnet of your network is. You can do this by checking the IP address of your Mac via the Network system preferences. Then, connect to each Axis camera via its Bonjour address, and assign them to static IP addresses on the correct subnet. Then, use these new IP addresses in SecuritySpy.

  • Ben, you absolutely nailed it!

I'd been trying for weeks to figure this out. The previous router was 192.168.0.1. The new one is 192.168.10.1. Even after looking at that number innumerable times, I missed the 10 and took it for a zero!

Not only did you solve this nagging problem, you provided valuable information regarding networks. I am so impressed and grateful. Thank you. (I confess that I still can't get my AirPort Extreme to work with the new router, but that's one for the priests!)

Problem totally solved. Best tech support I ever had, and an amazing product.

  • Great to hear this was the solution! And thank you for your kind words about our product and support :)
