Panning causes camera to crash

Hi all,

I have an issue with my camera & using SecuritySpy. It's a Foscam. I have read that there are some problems with this brand in relation to SecuritySpy. Still I hope one of you can help me with this problem.

I have a young dog that's learning to be alone for a couple of hours. I use my camera to talk and to keep an eye on what he's doing. I can't get my full room (living room + kitchen) in the frame so I have to pan the camera. I have an issue with this in SecuritySpy.

The Foscam app is hopeless. SecuritySpy works much better. However, 90% of the time when I pan the camera using SecuritySpy the video freezes and the camera seems to crash. When I'm home, I can manually restart the camera. When I'm away, I can't, of course. I have tried all profiles that the systems says would work and this happens with each one of them. The problem is that the camera won't be back online for about 15 minutes, sometimes longer. When it gets back online, it's in the default position so I have to move the cam again and often that causes it to freeze and crash yet again. When the cam crashes It either says "Timeout" or "Connection closed". As far as I know, the connection is fine, the port is open. The strange thing is: when this happens, I have no image but the software does seem to connect because I can hear sound every once in a while (while there is still no video or control and I still get the error message).

The crash does NOT happen when I use the official Foscam app. However, that app will almost never connect when I'm not on my own wifi network.

Does anyone know what's going on or how to fix this?

  • I can't really explain why this is happening but I doubt that there will be a fix. SecuritySpy uses the standard PTZ commands to move the camera, as documented by Foscam. It's strange that moving the camera with the Foscam app doesn't result in the same problem, but maybe they have some undocumented way of issuing PTZ commands. The best advice I can give here is to first check for any updated firmware available from Foscam for your camera, and if that doesn't do it, to open a support request with Foscam to see if they can shed any light on this.

  • Thank you for your reply, Ben. My camera won't update to the latest version, unless it's on LAN, but it's working on wifi. So I guess that might be the problem. Truth be told, it's a pretty frustrating piece of technology anyway, so I guess I'll better buy a new one.
