M1 Pro & M1 Max

Any thoughts on the benefits of the Pro and Max vs the M1? My Intel mini w/ 16 cameras (3.2GHz I7 / 16GB RAM) is struggling and I've 11 cameras to still be added. I'll also be setting up a couple of additional SS servers.

I'm guessing that it's worth waiting on these?

  • I'm excitedly waiting for these processors to be released in the mini - but until then, I am running the M1 mini with 16g ram and 512g drive. Its my primary machine, which I use for everything in my warehouse ( shipping, receiving, email, web browsing, audio and video streaming, etc,) and it also has 8 cameras on it running with motion detection and streaming a rotating live feed to a separate external monitor over an ethernet/hdmi converter. Video and jpeg captures are being stored on an external drive. Activity Monitor tells me that the system is currently using 8% of CPU, user is at 8%, and its 84% idle. Apps are using just over 5gb of memory. I'd say order a mini and load all your cameras up - it'll probably handle them all just fine. But those new processors sure look nice!!

  • The existing M1 Mac minis are really remarkable machines, and perfect for SecuritySpy. They can cope even with large systems of dozens of cameras. The M1 Pro and Max will be another step up in terms of speed, and also the increased RAM in these chips will be a big help to SecuritySpy for larger systems. But, there is no reason not to go for one of the current M1 minis now (with 16 GB RAM), as long as our system requirements calculator shows that they are suitable for your planned system. After all, we don't know when the M1 Max and/or Pro will make it into a new lineup of minis, and if your current Intel mini is struggling, you may not want to wait another year for this.
