ftp errors
I'm getting errors ftp'ing to my account on a major web hosting platform. (Ben, I don't want to post the name of the platform here for security reasons, but you're welcome to contact me via email and I'll give it to you privately)
Watching the SS Upload Queue, I see many still photo uploads failing one or two times, before the second or third retry works. Sometimes all three attempts fail.
The hosting platform is regularly blocking my IP because these ftp attempts occasionally trigger their security monitoring. Here's the error
07/20/2021 15:36:08: Error uploading file "/var/folders/px/klhrf0tx0hj4pyr5870_jl4c0000gn/T/SecuritySpy/0qakb4t946lsKwKEanEnkuhtKmJ99Nn". 5.3.4,91013,61 Connection refused.
I have to log in to the web hosting platform's management site and reset the blocked IP.
I have many cams and have to use two ftp users to avoid getting the following error:
07/20/2021 15:35:58: Error uploading file "/var/folders/px/klhrf0tx0hj4pyr5870_jl4c0000gn/T/SecuritySpy/0qakb4t946lsKwKEanEnkuhtKmJ99Nn". 5.3.4,90034,421 421 I can't accept more than 8 connections as the same user
******* Is there a way to see a log of the ftp server responses for the first and second failed upload attempts, since it's hard to tell why those attempts are failing but the third attempt works? ********
In other news, my movie uploads were also inconsistent and were consistently not uploading the entire movie, probably because the files were big and my internet connection slow. I worked around this by recording a second lower res stream from the cameras, and uploading that to an AWS S3 bucket, which seems more robust than the web host. I'd upload the photos there too but I want to be able to view them quickly on a website, and avoid the rigamarole of downloading them back from S3 with a S3/ftp client.
Lastly, these searches
https://bensoftware.com/forum/search?Search=ftp
https://bensoftware.com/forum/search?Search=aws
https://bensoftware.com/forum/search?Search=S3
all return NO RESULTS for me.
Many other forum searches return no or a poor selection of results.
I'm not impressed with "Powered by Vanilla"'s search engine.

Hi - it certainly sounds like the problem here is the server blocking SecuritySpy as a client. Possibly due to too frequent requests. The error message that is surprising is the one about more than 8 connections as the same user, because SecuritySpy will open a maximum of 2 concurrent connections to the same server only, so either connections are being left open somehow, or the server is reporting this message erroneously.
It's not possible to get the reason for a failed upload, if it subsequently succeeds. However the errors for the first two tries are going to the be the same as the errors encountered on the third try, so the messages in the log file are indicative of what is happening for all failed attempts.
It's worth contacting the hosting company to ask why you are being blocked so often, and ask them what restrictions they put on the upload service in terms of frequency of uploads and/or data transfer limits and/or concurrent connections. They should be able to check their logs and give you specific reasons and limits.
I agree that the search engine on this forum isn't great - I think it mindlessly filters out short words. I'll take a look to see if this can be improved.
