Static IP - Big Sur

I'm having trouble setting a static IP using Big Sur after some power outages with the storm Elsa passing through. Almost two hours with Apple Support - one First tier, two Second tier and a network guy. Every time I would try to set a static IP the mini would drop it's ethernet connection when ok was clicked to accept the settings. Finally the network guy told me to contact my router company. I looked through my Eero router app and found nothing to assign an address so I called them. After providing all my numbers, the tech assured me that the mission was accomplished and that this Mac mini would retain the same static IP address on restarts. She also told me to leave the network settings in Big Sur set to DHCP.

Maybe someone could shed some light on this.

  • LAN management is best done on the router and as you were instructed to leave the device set to DHCP.
I dont use Eero but a quick Google search shows this settings page https://www.howtogeek.com/346398/how-to-set-static-ip-addresses-on-your-eero-router/

Unless you are using CGNAT with your service provider, you shouldn't run into issues once the reservation has applied in Eero
  • Good find. Thanks. I had the misunderstanding that a static IP was solely a function of the NIC. Should have guessed, or, at least stumbled over it when I was setting up port forwarding right next door.
