Unicast vs Multicast requirements for Hikvision cameras and SecuritySpy

Newbie question: I would like to connect some Hikvision DS-2CD2386G2-ISU/SL cameras using SecuritySpy as my NVR. For a few of the cameras I will need to use existing RG6 cables with POE to Coaxial adapters. This is the model of adapter I am looking to use: LINOVISION POE over Coax EOC Converter IP Over Coax. I have read that this adapter only allows unicast and not multicast. Will this affect any features of the Hikvision cameras in SecuritySpy? I would like to use the two way audio.

  • The connections that SecuritySpy makes with IP cameras to obtain video/audio streams are all unicast, so this should not affect the ability for SecuritySpy to work with any IP camera.

If these coax converter devices indeed don't pass multicast packets, then the only thing that will not work is automatic device discovery, which does use multicast. In this case, you will have to set the cameras to static IP addresses, and then use this in SecuritySpy when setting up each camera.
  • This is super helpful. Thank you Ben!
