Syphon support?
Hi there -- I'm a recent discoverer of SecuritySpy and I am REALLY having fun using it in some pretty unusual ways. Having a bunch of cheap cameras around that can be triggered via Applescript opens up a lot of interesting possibilities.
I wanted to ask if you were familiar with the Syphon protocol, which allows programs to exchange video feeds with each other -- http://www.syphon.v002.info It's a real game changer in terms of getting video into programs that support it, and I would love to be able to use my cheapie Amcrest PTZ cameras as additional video sources that are managed by SecuritySpy but available as live, already processed video feeds elsewhere on my system.
Any chance you'd consider adding Syphon support to SecuritySpy?
Cheers,
Matt

Hi Matt,
Thanks for the suggestion, we haven't come across Syphon before but it looks intriguing and relatively easy to integrate. However this is the first time anyone has suggested it to us, so I'm not sure how much demand there is for us to add this feature. Could you outline a few usage cases to give us an idea of how this might be useful for users of SecuritySpy? -
Hi Ben,
First of all, let me clarify that my usage of SS has *nothing* to do with "security."
I don't know if that makes me unusual within the larger user base, but it really is a very useful program for capturing from multiple sources at the same time. The same thing can be said of CaptureSync, so my comments really apply there as well. And SwiftCapture is not marketed to the security market at all. So I guess I'd characterize it as a useful additional pipe for bringing sources into your programs and also sending them out to others.
In my particular setup, I'm using a program called QLab (http://www.figure53.com/), which I guess falls into the category of show control software. It's used to create lists of theatrical style cues that can be called sequentially, played back in various combinations, or displayed to a specific combination of video "surfaces" as the application calls for it. I am recording streams with SS, then using QLab to play them back in a live setting. It works perfectly well for my application (although with the number of streams I'm trying to manage in Applescript, life would be easier if the capture process in SS were more streamlined -- hence my comments in my other post from earlier today).
QLab is Syphon-enabled, so it accepts Syphon sources as inputs for its cues, and that's how I'm hoping to use it with SS. Currently, I can record videos or take still images with SS, process them and load them into QLab for display. QLab allows you to show live video obtained from Syphon sources, but not from IP cameras directly. There are other workarounds that involve having a separate IP camera-enabled Syphon application (such as the Syphon-enabled build of VLC), but that's more processing overhead and another application to keep an eye on. SS is already displaying the live feeds from the cameras it knows about, so I'd love to be able to use them.
From poking through the other various applications that are Syphon-enabled (Arkaos, QLab, ProPresenter, various music- and live-performance related mashup tools), Syphon seems to be particularly well adopted by people looking to use live video within larger artistic and live applications. That's certainly how I'm using SS. I get that that's totally not the primary market for SS, but I don't think the same can necessarily be said for either CaptureSync or SwiftCapture.
Also, FWIW, since Syphon is a two-way protocol, it'd be adding another method of getting video sources in SS. Not necessarily a purely security-related application, but you're starting to dance around the kinds of use cases that come into play when dealing with live streaming, video conferencing, and the like. -
Hi Ben -- I have dropped a note about SecuritySpy on the QLab forum (here: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/qlab/Luor7-JX6Y8). In addition to myself, I believe a fair number of QLab users would use SecuritySpy if it offered Syphon support. I've invited anyone from that forum to drop by here and share their use cases with you. Hopefully we get a few takers, but count me in as enthusiastically in support of Syphon on SS. Thanks!
