IOS app stopped working with version 4.2.14

I have three SecuritySpy systems, one running Version 4.2.14 (on Mojave 10.14 on an old mac mini) and another running the same version on Sierra.

These two versions have recently become inaccessible from the IOS app, i'm told "The security spy server vesion is too old, please update it".

However, not only do i not want to (the software works perfectly), but I can't update the O/S on either machine.

It's imperative that I can access the cameras from my phone, is there any way i can get them working again ?.

Please note, I can still access them through a web browser, but for phone access that is not good enough.

  • Sorry but SecuritySpy v4 was discontinued 5 years ago and we can no longer support it. There have been many changes in the recent iOS app updates, and in SecuritySpy software versions v5 and v6, and the latest app just won't work correctly with such an old version of the software. This is why the minimum server requirement is now 5.5.11 (which is also discontinued software, but recent enough that we are still able to support it). We have actually maintained this old-version support for an unusually long period of time - 5 years is a long time in the software world.

Unfortunately, Apple does not make it possible to obtain earlier app versions from the App Store - if it were possible then we would make it happen, but there is no way around this.

The latest v6 version of SecuritySpy has a minimum system requirement of 10.13 (High Sierra). The good news is that your Mac running Mojave will run SecuritySpy v6 just fine. The Mac running Sierra is one system too old, but if this is a 2010 model Mac mini or later, it can run High Sierra. If it's a 2009 Mac mini, it can run High Sierra with a patch.

SecuritySpy upgrade information is here: Upgrading to Version 6

If you want to explore hardware/macOS updates further, please email us and we can provide any further information you need. We'd also be happy to give you an extra discount for upgrading both licenses at once.

  • Thank you but if i go down that route it's only a matter of time before I hit a similar issue again and the machine running Sierra wont upgrade therefore after seven years with SecuritySpy and three machines running the software, I have no option but to ditch it for something that will work and wont force upgrades on me (Frigate seems to be my only option).

It's such a pity because earlier versions worked realy well, did everything i needed them to and was solid and reliable.

    Thanks for the help.

  • Paul, I was able to test both of the latest app versions 1.8.4 and 1.8.5 against a trial of SecuritySpy 4.2.14. I got it to work through the magic of a web proxy as a proof of concept. Viewing live cameras and recordings, and arm/disarm all worked. I wasn't able to test camera controls like pan and zoom. From a user's perspective, it seems as though the restriction was arbitrary and could be easily removed to restore functionality to the older servers if the developer wished.

  • Hi @paul_c I understand that it's frustrating when things stop working, however we have to set some reasonable boundaries. After buying a piece of software, having it continue to work for 7 years with no further payment is way above industry standards. We certainly don't want to lose you as a customer, but if you go elsewhere expecting better value, you may be disappointed. As mentioned, since you are in this unfortunate situation, I would be happy to offer you an additional discount to upgrade your two older licenses - just email us if you would like this.
