new ios software no longer compatible with v5.5.8

Hey there, longtime user and advocate of SecuritySpy. I have a 16-camera version running on an old i7 MacBook Air which is stuck at OSX 10.15.7.

I updated the iOS app today and lost access to my server as it's no longer supported. I'm loathe to update the server software since it's doing absolutely everything I need and has been for many years, and I can't install an older version of the iOS app due to the way that iOS updates work. (Heck I can't even "pin" the app to a specific version to prevent accidentally updating it).

I'm hoping that supporting older servers might be something that can be reconsidered.

  • One option is to upgrade to a Mac Mini M1 or above. I'm sure you can pick up a refurbished one cheap enough. Obviously you would rather not do that.

  • Hi @aandrew - two options for you:

    1. Simply update for free to the the latest v5 version on your Mac, which is 5.5.11, available from the Previous Versions of SecuritySpy page.
    2. Consider upgrading to SecuritySpy version 6 - this is a paid upgrade but you get a discount as an existing user.

Version 5, which you are using, has been discontinued for a while now. It is no longer supported or maintained.

Version 6 will run on your existing machine, although its lack of performance may preclude you benefitting from some of the newer features (e.g. the advanced neural-network-based motion detection). However, these new features are optional, and with your current settings, v6 should actually run more smoothly than v5 due to its many efficiency and performance improvements.

If you are also looking at upgrading your hardware, I agree with James' comment above that a used M1 mini is usually an excellent and inexpensive option.

  • Oh, I did not realize that there was newer v5; updated to 5.5.11 and all is right in the world again. Thank you very much!

I do intend on upgrading the hardware likely in two years (or sooner if this old laptop finally dies before then), and will be updating SecuritySpy as well at that time. I am absolutely not holding back from an update due any perceived underperformance (I don't feel it is underperforming at all) -- it's strictly a combination of "it's not broken so don't change it" and my own being a bit of a cheap ass. :-)

SecuritySpy has been an absolute treat to use, and as always the support is above and beyond. I tell everyone who hasn't grown tired of me talking about it how great my experience has been.

  • Great to hear that SecuritySpy is working so well for you, and thank you for spreading the word!
